Next to the Oratory lie the Chapel of Our Lady of the Patronage and the so-called “Miraculous Cellar,” where the miracle of the multiplication of wine is said to have taken place. The wine was distributed with bread to the poor and travellers. According to tradition, the wine from a single barrel never ran out as long as Saint Catherine continued to draw from it.
On the altar of the Chapel you can see a bas-relief depicting The Madonna and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist, attributed to the Florentine workshop of Benedetto da Maiano. The image was probably originally located on a wall of the alley next to the Oratory, allowing pilgrims and the Fontebranda’s residents to pray before it on a daily basis.
In addition to numerous carved and gilded wooden reliquaries, sacred vestments, and several precious pieces of goldsmith’s work - mostly dating from the 18th century - the Chapel houses an early 15th-century wooden statue known as the “Tanners’ Saint Catherine,” depicting Saint Catherine. For several centuries, the statue was kept in an external niche on a wall of the Fontebranda Fountain. It is located in the area where there used to be the tanneries and other workshops of the Wool Guild, which for many centuries played a central role in the life of Fontebranda’s people.
In the late 1960s, after the statue had been altered in the 18th century with a plaster covering and transformed into an image of the Virgin Mary, patient restoration work restored almost all of its original features, revealing once again the figure of Saint Catherine.
Every year in Siena, both at the Palazzo Pubblico and in this Chapel, the Feast of the Patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary over Siena is celebrated on 22nd September with a solemn religious ceremony.
