Welcome to the Museum of the Nobile Contrada dell’Oca
Visitors to the museum’s website are greeted by a fine early seventeenth-century bust of Saint Catherine sculpted by Domenico Cafaggi, known as “Capo.”
To the left of the entrance stands Saint Catherine’s Oratory in Fontebranda, built on the site where the Saint’s father, Jacopo Benincasa, carried out his work as a dyer.
The oratory houses a fine polychrome statue by Neroccio di Bartolomeo Landi, dating from 1474, as well as a series of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century frescoes depicting the Saint’s life.
Next to the Oratory lie the Chapel of Our Lady of Patronage and the “Miraculous Cellar,” where Catherine drew wine for the poor from a barrel that never ran dry for as long as the Saint continued to draw from it.
To the right, one enters the Hall of Victories, which houses the banners won by the Contrada in the Palio, precious works of goldsmithery, works of art, costumes, and objects documenting the life of the Contrada. It also features a number of videos on the history of Oca, the Palio, and the Oratory, as well as a series of displays exploring the life and traditions of the people of Fontebranda.
